Combustion characteristics in the various types of combustion chamber were investigated in relation to the effective use of air in the combustion chamber by swirl. The swirl characteristics were altered during operation by installing the 'variable angle swirler' around the scavenging ports of the two-stroke-cycle test engine. For most combinations of the testing conditions, the optimum values of swirl intensity for the best fuel consumption and for the lowest smoke density were respectively obtained by experiment.
