Extended antiphase boundaries in the DO3 ordered phase in a nonstoichiometric Fe3Si alloy

High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) was employed to study antiphase boundaries (APBs) with (100)/2 translation of DO3-type order in a nonstoichiometric Fe-14.6 at%Si alloy annealed at 873 K for various durations. We observed APBs in edge-on orientation, and recognized extended regions where lattice fringes are distorted or extinguished. The width of the regions observed increases up to about 2.5 nm with the annealing time. It is concluded that APBs are wetted by partially disordered layers due to segregation of excess Fe atoms, as predicted by statistical thermodynamics of nonstoichiometric ordering alloys.
