Feasibility study on the thermal management system for space solar power system

The paper clarifies the feasibility of cooling methods applied to SSPS taking account of other factors such as pressure loss, system size and fluid inventory. The application of two-phase fluid loop is a promising method for the transportation of a large amount of thermal energy due to the transportation of latent heat. The cooling systems for the different types of SSPS using microwave and laser for the transmission of energy are discussed. Problems inherent in the microwave SSPS is pointed out and the feasibility of laser SSPS as a possible system is explained from a viewpoint of the removal of dissipated thermal energy. The temperature increase in the fiber core is simulated for a structure by using a cooling jacket surrounding a fiber. And the optimal dimensions of the cooling jacket are investigated to minimize the pump power required for the operation of two-phase fluid loop. To increase the critical heat flux on a large heat transfer surface, a new structure of cold plate is devised and its performance is tested on ground.
