Heat Transfer Enhancement for Gravity Controlled Condensation on a Horizontal Tube by a Coiled Wire

    Heat transfer coefficient in gravity controlled condensation on a horizontal tube is enhanced by coiling a wire around the tube, because the condensate film between the coiled wires thins. An analytical solution is derived from simplified simultaneous differential equations. Two coefficients which are contained in the solution are determined from experimental results for Rh and ethanol vapours. Maximum heat transfer coefficient is obtained at the ratio of pitch to diameter of wire equal to two, and the increment ratio to a smooth tube is inversely proportional to one-fourth power of capillary constant. The present device will be useful to the condenser for organic substances.
