Large (LL) Japanese quail was compared with normal (RR) quail. The pectoralis muscle in the LL line was 2.6-2.7 fold heavier than that of the RR line. This muscle hypertrophy was associated with a 2.0-2.6 fold increase of cross sectional area of fasciculi in the superficial region of the muscle, and a 1.6-2.2 fold increase in the deep region, as well as only in female an elongation of fibre length. The pectoralis muscle was composed of types IIA and IIB fibres and showed central cluster of type IIA fibres surrounded by peripheral layer of type IIB. Hypertrophy was also observed in both fibre types IIA and IIB. In the deep region of the female LL muscle, fibre transformation from smaller type IIA to larger type IIB was evident. On the electron microscopic micrographs, myofibrils were more densely packed within the fibre in the LL muscle than the RR.
