N2 - To the Editor: A significant increase in the incidence of HLA-B8 and Dw3 has been reported in white patients with several autoimmune diseases, including juvenile-onset diabetes mellitus1 and Graves’ disease.23 Two possibilities to explain this phenomenon have been proposed.4 In the first, these two different organ-specific autoimmune diseases might be associated with the same allele of the same gene, and there might be a common initiating pathogenic event in these diseases; secondly, each of these diseases might be associated with a particular allele of different genes, both of which are in linkage disequilibrium with HLA-B8 and HLA-Dw3.
