Monolithic silica capillary column has been applied to the micro HPLC separation of polymers according to molecular weight. The monolithic silica in a fused silica capillary (200 μm i.d. × 150 cm) has a mesoporous structure (pore size = 20 nm) together with a μm-sized continuous through-pores. When THF was used as the mobile phase, 8 polystyrenes with M w from 7,450,000 to 2,900 were separated clearly (85,000 theoretical plates) and eluted in that order. The elution volume vs. log Mw plots showed excellent linearity. The pressure drop at a flow rate of 0.5 μL/min was 2.5 MPa. The maximum porosity exceeding 7,000,000 can not be explained by a size-exclusion effect of 20 nm mesopores.
