A Zn^IIPb^II complex ZnPb(L)(H₂O)₂(ClO₄)₂ of a macrocyclic compartmental ligand L^2- is converted under alkaline conditions into a hydroxo complex ZnPb(L)(OH)(H₂O)ClO₄ that hydrolyzes tris-p-nitrophenyl phosphate (TNP) to bis-p-nitrophenyl phosphate (BNP-) forming a BNP-bridged complex [ZnPb(L)(BNP)]ClO₄.
