We thank Dr. Tomohisa Sawada and Dr. Daishi Fujita (The University of Tokyo) for providing advice on the complex preparation. We also acknowledge Dr. Kentaro Ishii (National Institute of Natural Sciences) and Dr. Hirokazu Yagi (Nagoya City University) for useful discussions. This work was partly supported by a Grant for Basic Science Research Projects from The Sumitomo Foundation, the Okazaki ORION project, the Nanotechnology Platform Program (Molecule and Material Synthesis) of MEXT, MEXT/JSPS Grants in Aid for Scientific Research (JP25102007, JP25102008, and JP15K17889), and the AMED Project for utilizing glycans in the development of innovative drug discovery technologies (16ae0101040h0001).

N2 - Hybridization of a self-assembled, spherical complex with oligosaccharides containing Lewis X, a functional trisaccharide displayed on various cell surfaces, yielded well-defined glycoclusters. The self-assembled glycoclusters exhibited homophilic hyper-assembly in aqueous solution in a Ca2+-dependent manner through specific carbohydrate–carbohydrate interactions, offering a structural scaffold for functional biomimetic systems.
