In-situ Measurements of Current Distribution in the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell for Marine Power Applications

One of the problems of solid oxide fuel cells is current distribution because it decays total cell performance and efficiency causes the electrode degradation thermo-mechanically and chemically. In particular, this behavior is complicated for hydrocarbon fuel. Elucidation of the current distribution is required to optimize the gas flow condition under operation and to develop a new cell design. The aim of this work is thus to measure the current distribution in an anode-supported microtubular cell with segmented cathodes, comparing with the surface temperature of each cathode measured by a thermocouple. The present study investigates the current and temperature distributions in the cell with hydrogen and a simulated syngas composition fuel. We obtain a current distribution, in which the current in the downstream part is smaller than that in the upstream part due to the fuel starvation in the cases of hydrogen. The cell performance for the syngas fuel is lower than that of hydrogen fuel. The temperature distribution is also different between them due to the enhanced internal reforming, particularly in the downstream part where hydrogen fed from the upstream decreases and the product water partial pressure becomes large.
