(Polymer/liquid crystal: LC) composite films consisting of a continuous LC phase embedded in a three-dimensional network of a polymer matrix show a light scattering-light transmitting switching upon application of an electric field OFF-ON. The electro-optical properties of the composite systems are known to be strongly dependent on the aggregation structure of the polymer network. Generally, the mesh size of the polymer network decreases with increasing reaction rate of monomer. However, when a mixture of acrylate monomer and divinylether monomer was used as a prepolymer to be photo-polymerized in the composites, no clear correlation between the reaction rate of monomer and the final morphology of the composite was found, suggesting that a factor other than kinetics of polymerization affected the polymer network formation. A permissible temperature range wider than 10 K to prepare the composite system that shows low voltage driving was achieved by using an initial solution of the (mono-acrylate monomer/di-vinylether monomer/LC) mixture system.
