In the present report, various factors affecting the optimum swirl intensity were examined by making use of the specially developed two-cycle direct injection test engine, in which swirl intensity could be altered during engine operation with 'variable angle swirler' installed around the scavenging ports. Features of two types of injection systems, central- and side-injection systems, were compared as to the effective use of air in the combustion chamber, that is, the optimization of swirl intensity and injection nozzle specifications coupled with combustion chamber shapes.
