Transition metal complexes of aliphatic triazole M(1)3Cl 2 (M: Fe, Co) (1: C12OC3Trz, M = Co(II), Fe(II)) gives heat-set gel-like networks in organic media. In this study, we investigated their interaction with liquid crystal molecules. When liquid crystal (JC-1041XX) was added to M(1)3Cl2 (M: Fe, Co) in CHCl3at a weight ratio of 9:1, stable organogels were obtained. They show reversible spin transition (FeII) and coordination changes (CoII), without dissolution of the gels. Apparently, nanofibrous assemblies of M(1)3Cl2 were stabilized by the interaction with liquid crystal molecules. Freeze-dried chloroform gels showed nematic liquid crystals as observed by polarized optical microscopy. The metal complexes in liquid crystals would provide a new research area in materials chemistry.
