This article reports on studies to produce lower cost carbon fibres manufactured from coal tar pitch. The study blends modified pitches (isotropic and mesophase pitches derived from naphthalene) with the coal tar pitch. Results show that cost benefits arise in the blended fibres due to reductions in temperatures and stabilization times.
