A number of laboratory tests have been used to diagnose cancer and for post-treatment follow-up of patients with cancer. The aims of these tests are; 1, evaluation of the biological characteristics of each cancer; 2, identification of micrometastases of cancer, for example to the lymph node, bone marrow and peripheral blood; 3, detection of patients at high risk for developing cancer. Cancer diagnosis and treatment should be improved by further developments in molecular biology and clinical chemistry, in the next century.
