    抄録

This chapter provides insights into the history of garden and landscape design education in Japan. Recognizing three educational systems, the oldest one is the apprenticeship system that, after around 1912 merged into an atelier system. The second is the in-house system of government and city administrations. The third is the academic system of institutes of higher education. Addressing the question of how the three educational systems relate to one another, and how they differ, this chapter spans the time of the Meiji and Taisho (1868-1925) and the Showa periods (1926-1989). During the first period, the modernization of Japan started and the academic system developed. During the second period, education responded to challenges of accelerating economic development, particularly after the Great Kanto Earthquake (1923), World War II (1945), and following reconstruction.
