Mapping Surface Displacements and Aquifer Characteristics Around the Kumamoto Plain, Japan, Using Persistent Scatterer Interferometry

In this study, we used persisitent scatterer interferometry to monitor surface displacements related to groundwater level changes around the Kumamoto plain. Groundwater has been used for daily purposes in the area, and the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake with a maximum magnitude of Mw 7.0 occurred at the area. The use of ALOS/PALSAR data showed seasonal displacements that correspond to seasonal groundwater flow from January 2007 to January 2011. On the other hand, the analysis of ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 data revealed local surface displacements after the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, which were validated by Sentinel-1A and GNSS data. Especially, we found that the local ground uplifts that correspond to groundwater level increase after the earthquake. From changes in skeletal storage coefficient, we interpreted that aquifer properties such as porosity and aquifer matrix compressibility altered by the earthquake. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of aquifer monitoring using persistent scatterer interferometry.
