Microphase-separated stmcture of polyurethane elastoniers under external stimuli

Polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) were prepared with poly (oxytetramethylene) glycol (PTMG), 4,4'-diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) by a prepolymer method. Microphase separation of the PUE was investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). PUE was uniaxially deformed up to various strains. Deformation of microphase-separated structure was observed under the elongation using atomic force microscopy (AFM). AFM observation without elongation revealed the microphase-separated structure, which is composed of the hard segment domains surrounded by soft segment matrix. At lower elongation (εe < 1), the distance between the hard segment domains became larger along the elongation direction. With increasing elongation, the hard segment domains were deformed and oriented.
