The carbonization of coal tar pitch denitrogenated with nickel and aluminum sulfates was studied to examine whether the the removal of nitrogen compounds in coal tar pitch leads to the reduction of nitrogen content in the resultant coke. Nickel and aluminum sulfates were found to be effective to remove basic nitrogen compounds from coal tar pitch to give the needle cokes of low nitrogen content which are expected to show smaller puffing at the rapid graphitization. The efficiency of combination of extractive fractionation with adsorbing seperation of basic nitrogen species is brieflydiscussed for the practical application.
