A novel method for non-contact measurement of melt viscosity was developed based on the principle of electric field induced surface deformation. In this method, an electric field is applied by means of a needle electrode set just above the melt surface. The local electric stress exerted on the surface area induces surface deformation. The viscosity of a soda-lime-silica melt at 1423 to 1723 K was evaluated by the time constant of the surface deformation, which yields the viscosity as resistance. Experimental results revealed that the technique of electric field induced surface deformation has potential for use as a measurement tool for melt viscosity.
