Non-destructive and simple measurement of heartwood moisture content in sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) standing tree was tried. This method measures the vibration by lateral impact to tree trunk. The following results were obtained: 1) Positive correlations were obtained between diameters of standing trees (D) and the inverse of resonance frequency for lateral impact vibration (1/Fr). 2) Analyzing the vibration mode by finite element method and modal analysis, lateral impact vibration was identified to be a longitudinal vibration in a cross section of tree. 3) It was proven that heartwood moisture content could be estimated using square inverse of the product of lateral impact resonance frequency and diameter (1/(D×Fr)2).
