Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with micrognathia caused by destruction of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) may develop obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).1 Tracheotomy is thought to be an effective treatment of this condition.2,3 We performed bilateral total replacement of the TMJs in a tracheotomized OSA patient with RA using alloplastic TMJ components. This treatment resulted in dilation of the upper airway, permitted closure of the tracheal stoma, and improved masticatory function.
