Odd even number effect of methylene-chain of polycarbonate glycol on physical properties of polyurethane elastomers

Polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) were synthesized from polycarbonate (PC) glycols with different number of methylene chains between carbonate groups. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) profiles of PC glycol showed that the odd even effect of methylene chain affected on the crystallinity of the PC glycol. DSC thermograms revealed that the degree of microphase separation of the PC based PUEs became stronger with increasing number of methylene chain of PC glycol. The PC glycol with methylene chain of even-number based PUEs exhibited a steep increase around larger strain. It was revealed from these results that the number of methylene chain of PC glycol affects not only on the properties of PC glycol itself but the PUEs incorporated these PC glycols.
