On-chip cell separation based on mechanical characteristics

We propose an on-chip cell separation method based on mechanical characteristics using the microfluidic chip where a pair of force sensor probes is integrated, as shown in Fig. 1. We utilize the stiffness index of cell for separation. The cells are compressed by the force sensor probes placed at the measurement area of the microfluidic chip, and their stiffness indexes are obtained from the information of reactive force during deformation.. We constructed the system and evaluated it using mouse oocyte. By switching the flow in the microchannel, we achieved the separation based on the index as shown in Fig. 4.
