Order Parameters and Side-Chain Conformation in Ethylcellulose/Chloroform Liquid Crystal Phases

Deuterium magnetic resonance spectra of chiral nematic phases formed by deuterated ethylcellulose dissolved in chloroform show three overlapping powder patterns, which can be attributed to three nonequivalent (CD3CH2) substituents at the 2,3, and 6 positions of the 1,4-linked anhydroglucose units. The qudrupolar splittings were measured as functions of temperature and concentration. The results were analyzed in terms of side-chain conformations and the order parameters of the anhydroglucose unit.
