Organic-metallo hybrid polymers based on metal induced self-assembly of organic ligands

We are interested in terpyridine-metal hybrid polymers because terpyridine ligands possess an excellent ability to coordinate metal ions. Metallosupramolecular polyelectrolytes (MEPEs) are synthesized through self-assembly of 1,4-bis(terpyridyl)benzene and Co(II) or Fe(II). We have been studying the properties of MEPEs containing Co(II) or Fe(II), and here we report the syntheses and properties of MEPEs containing both metal ions. Just mixing Co-MEPE and Fe-MEPE results in the formation of a block copolymer, which is proved by CV, UV-Vis, Mass spectra. Self assembly of 1,4-bis(terpyridyl)benzene, Co(II) and Fe(II) also resulted in polymers randomly containing two metals. To control the position of each metal, we have used an unsymmetrical ligand, monobromo substituted bisterpyridine. As a result, we have successfully synthesized MEPE containing Co(II) and Fe(II) alternatively.
