Oxidation reactivity of mesophase pitch derived from C9 alkylbenzenes

The oxidation reactivity of a particular mesophase pitch which consists of cata-type arrangement of 6-9 condensed aromatic rings was studied at 230° and 270°C to reveal its unique features in the oxidative stabilization of its fiber form. Its high rate of oxidation, picking up 12% oxygen in 240 min at 230°C is ascribed to its large contents of methyl and isolated aromatic C-H groups. Oxidation was found to introduce quinone-type oxygen in addition to aldehyde, ether, and carboxylic groups, which have been found in the conventional mesophase pitches after stabilization. Although quinone is rapidly introduced in the initial stage of the stabilization, ether and phenolic groups appear necessary for the completion of stabilization for subsequent carbonization at 600°C by the heating rate of 10°C/min.
