Pattern formation in a system with spontaneously-broken rotational symmetry

    We propose a coupled equation consisting of the Ginzburg-Landau equation and the Swift-Hohenberg equation as a model of pattern-forming systems with spontaneously broken isotropy. Transitions to defect turbulence are investigated in the case that an external force is applied. Some intermediate states such as zigzag patterns, skewed-varicose patterns and oscillating zigzag patterns are found when the external force is changed. The Ginzburg-Landau equation has a vortex as a topological defect. Spiral patterns appear for the Swift-Hohenberg equation around a vortex of the Ginzburg-Landau equation.
