Biomineralization is the process by which living organisms produce complicated structures of inorganic crystals using interaction among organic materials at ordinary temperatures and pressures. This biomineralization is expected to be a next generation synthetic process of materials. In this study, we investigated the crystallization of calcium carbonate in thermotropic nematic liquid crystalline phases on a hydrophilic glass substrate by use of the crown ether derivatives as calcium ion carriers. In the case of crystallization in nematic phase, crystals of fiber form were obtained. This result suggested that the nematic phase with orientational order affected the crystal growth. The obtained crystal was identified as calcium carbonate by Raman spectroscopy.
