N2 - Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can play a major role in relaying data in 6G networks. This paper studies the system performance of IRS selection (IRS-S) for both non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA). We first present two selection schemes in NOMA scenario for IRS relays, namely, the two-stage and the max-min IRS-S strategy. Then, we drive a closed-form expression for the system outage probability for the two-stage IRS-S scheme and the OMA scenario. In addition, simulation results are provided to validate the analytically driven expressions of the outage probability for the proposed schemes. The results confirm that the two-stage IRS-S strategy has superior performance compared to all selection schemes in both NOMA and OMA setups.
