Performance of pulsed combustion jet ignition at high pressures and temperatures

Ignition and combustion by Pulsed Combustion Jet with lean methane-air mixtures at high pressures and temperatures were investigated using a rapid compression machine. The compact rapid compression machine has been developed for engine combustion research. The compression and stop motion of a compression piston is controlled by a cam shape, and the cam is operated by a driving piston and compressed air. The combustion process was monitored by pressure measurements and high-speed schlieren photography. Lean limit was extended by Pulsed Combustion Jet, and the superiority of Pulsed Combustion Jet over standard spark ignition was demonstrated in enhancing the process of combustion in turbulent lean mixtures.
