Photo-electrochemical properties of hydrogen in anodically oxidized niobium

    The effect of hydrogen charging on the properties of niobium oxide was studied by photo-electrochemical measurements for anodically oxidized niobium. The niobium oxide studied was an n-type semiconductor, and an anodic photocurrent was observed on illumination with light. From the spectrum of the photocurrent the band gap energy of the oxide was determined. The spectrum changed on the introduction of hydrogen into the oxide by cathodic charging and ion implantation prior to the photocurrent measurements. Hydrogen charging induced an additional photocurrent for the illumination of light with wavelength longer than that corresponding to the band gap energy of the oxide. The distribution of electron states induced by hydrogen charging was estimated from the electrode capacitance measured by changing the electrode potential. The additional photocurrent induced by hydrogen recovered during anodic polarization, i.e. by the release of hydrogen. The rate of the recovery of the additional photocurrent was accelerated by the illumination of light.
