Electron attachment to neutral clusters of 2-chloroacrylonitrile (CAN) creates a complex distribution of anions consistent with the occurrence of an intra-cluster polymerization reaction. With the exception of the monomer anion, all intense peaks in the parent ion mass spectrum accessible from the dimer can be generated by photofragmentation of (CAN)-2. The dominant decay channel for the dimer anion appears to be sequential elimination of HCl monomers, similar to the degradation observed for the bulk polymer formed from CAN.
