The rubber surface of a smoother roll in a paper machine is deformed into a certain convex polygon at a high nipforce and at an operating speed of the rolls rotating in contact with each other viscoelastically. The polygonal deformation occurs gradually, and this develops into strong vibration of the machine. This paper describes the modelling of this system, regarding this vibration phenomenon as instability due to the time lag, and the theoretical analysis as a study of the mechanism of the phenomenon. The authors also conducted an experiment to identify the parameters used in the analytical model. They found from the test results that deformation recovery characteristics of the rubber are time-dependent. From the numerical computation using the parameters obtained experimentally, the analytical results showed good agreement with those of the phenomena generated in the actual machines.
