Preparation and properties of nanohybrid with polymer-grafted-titanium oxide nanoparticles

PS-grafted-TiO2 (diameter 15 nm and 35 nm) nanoparticles with high densities were successfully prepared through direct polymerization from surface immobilized initiator. The particles were stably dispersed in good solvents for polymer chain due to the steric repulsion among grafted chains derived from osmotic pressure effect and affinity for solvents. Furthermore, although Non-grafted-TiO2/PS film did not show high transmittance and ultraviolet absorption characteristic owing to aggregation, when PS-grafted-TiO2 particles were added into PS matrix, the films showed high transmittance in the visible light region accompanying ultraviolet absorption characteristic of TiO2 due to the fine dispersion of nanoparticles into PS matrix. In the film, PS matrix is θ solvent characteristics for surface PS chains. The result of mechanical and thermal properties of the film reflecting these characteristics will be also discussed.
