Prognostic significance of number of positive axillary nodes in breast carcinoma: Univariate and multivariate analyses

To clarify prognostic factors in node-positive breast carcinoma, 96 Japanese patients who were curatively treated by either a standard or modified radical mastectomy with total axillary lymph node dissection were studied. In the univariate analysis, disease-free survival correlated significantly with location of tumors (P = .0066) and the number of positive nodes (P = .0137). In the multivariate analysis, independent prognostic factors for recurrence were the location of tumors (upper inner, relative risk = 2.31) and the number of positive nodes (four or more, relative risk = 2.17). The size of tumors, level of axillary nodes, and status of estrogen receptor did not show a prognostic value. The results indicate that the number of positive nodes, not the level, is the most important prognostic indicator in node-positive breast carcinoma.
