The Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) reconnaissance team investigated damages to buildings systematically in collaboration with Turkish universities after the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake. An inventory damage survey on approximately 2700 buildings was performed in Golcuk and Degirmendere to derive detailed damage ratios and their spatial distributions near the surface fault line in academic point of view. Effects of site and structural characteristics on the damage ratios were analyzed based on the statistical data. On the other hand, systematic array observations of microtremors and aftershocks were also carried out in several sites of damaged regions to identify structural characteristics of soils and to estimate site effects on the amplification of the main shock. This paper highlights the results of the investigations and the analyses in progress by the AIJ team. Copyright
