A chemical heat pump with hydrolysis of acetal is a new heat-driven heat pump system for generation of cold thermal energy. Acetal hydrolysis consists of four elemental reactions. The most feasible rate-controlling step is in the hemiacetal production process. A reaction rate equation has been proposed from the above reaction mechanism. The generation rate of cold thermal energy evaluated from the reaction rate equation is high enough for the heat pump system. Improvement of the separation process is required for practical use of the heat pump system. The reaction system of acetal hydrolysis can be used for chemical heat transport.
