Quantitative evaluation of wear property of polyethylene-on-ceramic sliding pairs for joint prostheses in multidirectional sliding test

The wear property of polyethylene-on-ceramic sliding pairs for joint prostheses was evaluated quantitatively and compared with polyethylene-on-metal sliding pairs. The multidirectional sliding wear test with a newly developed pin-on-plate test apparatus was used in this study as a new screening method for the tribological investigation of prosthetic joint materials. In this method, the ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) pin specimen was moved along the two-dimensional sliding pathway to simulate the multidirectional sliding motion of joint prostheses and to reproduce the clinically relevant wear behavior of UHMWPE. Therefore, the polyethylene wear rate became significantly higher in this method compared with the negligible and unrealistic wear in the conventional pin-on-disk wear test. Results of the wear test indicate that the wear property of UHMWPE-on-ceramic is better than that of UHMWPE-on-metal, and also shows that our new zirconia ceramics, HTOZ, has preferable tribological characteristics.
