Real-time measurement of interfacial tension by image processing

This paper describes a method for constructing a precision online real-time measuring system of the interfacial tension of fluids by analyzing images of the fluids' drop shape interface. The measurement is based on MMSE fitting of a solution curve of Young-Laplace ordinary differential equations onto an observed drop curve. The system showed higher accuracy and efficiency than previously reported ones because we have introduced in our system a new method of detecting drop shape with sub-pixel accuracy and a Levenber-Marquardt-Morrison method of nonlinear optimization. In addition, we have proposed a new method of evaluating curve fitting error. Our method presents an effectual and precise means of analyzing time dependent phenomena in various fluids' interfaces through observing interfacial tension.
