This paper investigates the relationship between a nonlinear cochlear inputoutput (IO) function obtained using the psychological method and the physiological functions of the cochlea. To fill the gap in psychological and physiological findings, the psychological method was employed to estimate the cochlear IO function in a simulation using a physiological cochlear model incorporating nonlinearity based on an outer hair cell (OHC) model as the only active element in the model. The OHC model is based on the somatic motility of the OHC. Simulation results show nonlinear cochlear IO functions. The shape of the cochlear IO function depending on the signal frequency and rate of nonlinearity in the cochlear IO function was comparable to both psychological and physiological measurements. The nonlinear IO function is produced by the OHC model. Thus, the nonlinear cochlear IO function obtained using the psychological method is generated by the somatic motility of the OHC.
