Mosses are plants adapted to various extreme environments on Earth and have several advantageous to cultivate in a limited space. The Space Moss research group has been studying the effects of gravity on the growth and physiological responses of plants using Physcomitrella patens. Moss samples were launched by SpX-18 (July 2019) and SpX-19 (December), and cultivated for about 4 weeks using the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) in the Japanese Experiment Module (Kibo) of ISS. Microscopic live observation of rhizoids was also performed
for a few days. The moss samples cultivated in the µ g environment in space did not differ in the total biomass, the number of gametophore, and the mechanical strength of the stem compared with the control group. On the other hand, the elongation of the rhizoids was promoted, the shape of stems and cells tended to be elongated, the chloroplasts became smaller, and the photosynthetic activity decreased. We will perform detailed analyses including transcriptome analysis and electron microscope analysis in the future.
