Spatiotemporally generated microfluids with the aid of high-speed flow control

We present an unpreceded concept of "spatiotemporally generated microfluidics(SGMs)" which utilize spatiotemporal pressure fields by the combination of microchannel structures and ultrafast flow control. By applying the on-chip ultrafast flow control technique to conventional microfluids, we can realize advanced fluid components having spatiotemporal functions. Based on this concept, we demonstrated two examples utilizing the SGMs for asymmetric flow resistors(AFRs) which work like microfluidic diodes, and the on-chip sorting of large particles of RYHU 100 ȝP XVLQJ a traveling vortex. The proposed concept breaks through design strategies of the conventional microfluids to acquire multiple functions for cell manipulations.
