The shipbuilding industry made an enormous contribution to Japan's postwar rehabilitation. Since shipbuilding is one of the major applications of steel plate, it may be said that the steel industry, especially the steel plate sector, has made remarkable progress in tandem with the shipbuilding industry. In the construction equipment and industrial machinery fields, the change in industrial structure is faster than in shipbuilding. Amid the rapid growth of Chinese fabricators, certain overseas steel mills monopolistically control the Chinese market. Accordingly, it is important for the company to press ahead with technological development and catch up with them. In any case, in the fields of shipbuilding and construction equipment and industrial machinery, the ability to develop such technology that permits winning the largest market share is the most important.
