STRESS AND STRAIN ANALYSIS OF A RECTANGULAR SPECIMEN IN AN ENFORCED-EQUAL-DISPLACEMENT CONDITION.

In a previous report, we showed visually the anomalous stress and strain profiles existing near both grip ends of a rectangular specimen in elongation testing. The boundary condition of the finite-element method adopted for the simulation was considered to be an ″equal-load distribution″ at the grip ends. The simulation can also be carried out under an ″enforced-equal-displacement″ condition at the nodal points on the grip ends for a more realistic simulation. In practice, the ends of the specimen are elongated equally with lateral restraint if the specimen slippage occurring at the ends is not taken into account. When the stress and strain distributions were simulated under the latter condition, a pronounced difference in results from the equal-load distribution condition was found at the outermost elements of the grip ends. Although both sets of results showed a similar tendency in terms of stress and strain distributions except for these elements, the two profiles are worth comparing. The computer program (ISAS 2nd) for the finite-element method adopted here was obtained from the University of Tokyo's computer library. Prior to the computation, we confirmed that the stress and strain distribution profiles obtained using this program were identical with previous results under identical geometrical and mechanical boundary conditions.
