This paper concerns studies of the friction between piston rings and cylinder liners in reciprocating internal combustion engines. Calculations regarding the oil film behavior were carried out on the basis of the theory of hydrodynamic lubrication on the assumption that the pressure region of the oil film varies according to the Reynolds boundary condition. Then the frictional force was estimated with regard to the viscous shear force in the cavitated region as well as in the pressure region. On the other hand, the frictional force of the piston assembly was measured accurately by means of an improved floating liner method having non-contact support by hydrostatic bearings. Finally, the influences of engine speed, oil viscosity, gas pressure and the number of piston rings on the frictional characteristics were evaluated on the basis of the results of a theoretical analysis and experiments.
