Study on adsorption cooling system powered by fuel cell waste heat

    This paper presents the performance results of two adsorption cooling cycles which are powered by waste heat from polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) of temperature between from 60 to 80°C. The studied adsorption cooling cycles employ activated carbon fiber (ACF) of type A-20/ethanol and RD type silica gel/water as the adsorbent/refrigerant pairs. Ethanol and water are taken as refrigerants as both the ozone depleting potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP) are zero and they do not have any toxicity. A cycle simulation computer program was developed to study the performance of the adsorption cycles which comprise with an evaporator, a condenser and one pair of adsorber/desorber heat exchangers. System performance in terms of cooling capacity and coefficient of performance (COP) are determined and compared between the studied two systems varying heat source temperature and adsorption/desorption cycle time.
