Surface structures of ABC triblock copolymers and their surface reconstruction with environmental change

Surface structure in poly(isoprene)-block-polystyrene-block-poly(2- vinylpyridine) (ISP) triblock copolymer film with double gyroid structure in bulk was studied under air and in water by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Under air, the ISP film surface was covered by poly(isoprene) which was the lowest surface energy component due to minimization of the total free energy. On the other hand, in water, poly(2-vinylpyridine) component, which is the highest surface free energy component, could be taken out through poly(isoprene) layer. These results clearly indicate that surface structures of ISP film can be sensitively varied with an environmental change.
