The relations between water surface waves and subsurface pressure are investigated in detail by comparing the frequency response functions obtained theoretically and observationally. The frequency response function from subsurface pressure to water surface elevation shows peculiarities in its lower and higher frequency ranges. These peculiarities can be explained by the weakly nonlinear wave theory considering the directionality of irregular waves. With this theoretical and observational background, a simple but practical method for surface wave recovery is proposed. The proposed method is examined for field wave data obtained at Hitachinaka Port (water depth is 30 m) and Nakagusuku Bay (water depth is 50 m) and the validity of the method is discussed.
