Car horns were originally installed in vehicles for safety. However, many urban areas in several countries face serious noise problems related to the use of car and motorbike horns. The ultimate goals of the present study are to clarify the causes of driver horn use and to propose a transportation system that suppresses horn use. To this end, relationships between horn use and factors including driver awareness and behaviour, the vehicular environment and the transportation system should be investigated. The present study therefore conducted surveys to grasp the current circumstances of horn use and traffic at three intersections in an urban area of Taiwan. It was found that the frequency of honking increased with the traffic volume during hours other than weekday rush hours. It is supposed that high traffic volumes during the morning and evening rush hours on weekdays were due to the presence of many motorcycles. In terms of vehicle type, the relationship between driver horn use and the traffic volume of standard-sized vehicles was found. Moreover, the analysis of horn use during traffic signal cycles at each intersection revealed that the frequency of horn use increased when left-turning vehicles obstructed traffic in other lanes.
